Stratos Kalafatis

In the traces of history

The notion of place as a canvas where the past and the present time are reflected takes center stage at the new photo exhibition by Stratos Kalafatis hosted at the Bernier/Eliades gallery of Brussels.

The exhibition’s title Thou shalt see me at Philippi alludes to the famous phrase related to the battle of Philippi, which took place at 42 BC, when Octavian and Marcus Antonius crossed swords with Brutus and Cassius in the biggest civil conflict of the Roman times.
Following the exhibitions Athos / Colors of Faith and Archipelagos the renowned Greek photographer invites the audience to his new journey, to Pangaio’s Tenagi, a region with multiple connotations; an ancient landmark, a religious pilgrimage, a battlefield. This
historically charged location is Stavros Kalafatis’ place of origin.

In his works showcased at the Belgian capital’s gallery up until April 29th, he uses the traces of history as a lynchpin to detect the presence of the past into today’s reality, unfolding the thread that intertwines landscape and identity.

In his own words:
“There, in Edonis land, as the light fades out, Lykourgos, Orpheus, Dionysus and Persephone meet the traders, the soldiers, the workers, the shepherds, the poets, the peddlers, the refugees and the fugitives, taking a breather down the flatland. As it gets darker in the mud
baths, in Brutus’ camp, the night is transformed into clay to cover the wounds of the biggest civil conflict that changed the history of the world”.

In 2020 Stratos Kalafatis had taken part in the collective exhibition Six Greek Artists hosted at the Bernier-Eliades gallery of Brussels.
