The phrase “a sound exploration through hidden narratives and political crossroads” serves as the ideal description of the core philosophy behind the latest album by Greek bass player and composer Petros Klampanis, titled Latent Info. Through his new work, the internationally acclaimed artist delves into his personal music journey, exploring sounds and voices that have faded away amidst the frenzy rhythms of our chaotic world.
The new album balances between the Greek music tradition and the contemporary soundscapes. The tracks are filtered through the personal music traits and the longstanding experience of Petros Klampanis, who lives and works in New York, a multicultural environment that paves the way for new tendencies to emerge, interweaving different cultures and traditions. Moreover, in Latent Info the artist conveys his concern over the great social challenges of our times.
The song “Over the Calypso Deep” binds together his childhood memories, back at the time when he used to fish alongside his uncle in one of the deepest spots of the Mediterranean Sea, and a tragedy that haunted his thoughts: a 2023 shipwreck that cost the lives of 300 immigrants, many of whom were women and children. This horrific event struck a sensitive chord deep inside him, strengthening his determination to use music as a vehicle for shedding light on struggles and ordeals often kept in the shadows.
All songs reflect Klampanis’ “less is more” philosophy, crafting spacious sound worlds that allow music to flow unrestrained, inviting the audience to fill the silences with their imagination. His teaming up with pianist Kristjan Randalu and drummer Ziv Ravitz enhanced the album’s emotional depth and sensitivity, offering a gripping experience that encourages the listeners to embrace the hidden meaning behind the notes. In the artist’s words: “This album is my response to the noise of the modern world, a sound journey to the beauty, the strength and the truth of the invisible and the unspoken.”
The album Latent Info was released by Enja Records in collaboration with PKmusik.
