The new series of works by the internationally acclaimed Greek visual artist Vasilis Avramidis is showcased as a solo exhibition, from May 12 to June 5, at London’s Wilder Gallery, one of the most prestigious modern art galleries in the UK, under the title “After Hours”.
These seven new oil paintings, which speak volumes of the artist’s mastery, revolve around the familiar themes that have put him in the limelight, reflecting the human trace lingering between imaginary and open-air natural landscapes. Avramidis’ painting themes, unique and breathtaking, capture the viewer’s glance right from the start. His multilayered touch, through which architectural and sculptural forms emerge, in tandem with the use of lighting that follows in the footsteps of the 17th much-revered masters, are the features that “captivate” the viewer’s glance, calling out an invitation to delve into these eerie and unearthly sceneries.
These works underwent through multiple stages of transformation within the confined walls of Avramidis’ studio. Some started out as portraits or illustrations of sculptural figures, only to be transmuted into still life and – ultimately – deformed and uncanny landscapes. As the artist explains: “I am deeply drawn by genre-wise contradictions, which evolve and culminate into these uninhabited landscapes that emit a sense of “imperfection”, reminiscent of their earlier identity, as sculptural forms or still life.”
