The Cultural Society, in the framework of the MATAROA axis of action, joins forces with the MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography of for the promotion of emerging Greek photographers!

MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography issues an open call to emerging photographers to submit proposals for the exhibition programme of the Thessaloniki PhotoBiennale 2023 / 25th International Photography Meeting to be inaugurated in October 2023.

The Thessaloniki PhotoBiennale, which this year completes thirty-four years of existence and is one of the oldest photography festivals in Europe, is an important platform for the presentation of contemporary and historical Greek photographic creation and a vital crossroads for its fermentation with the corresponding international scene.

This year’s open invitation to emerging Greek photographers is co-organized and supported for the second time by the Cultural Business Association of Northern Greece and within the framework of the MATAROA action, which aims to promote and promote contemporary Greek artistic creation.

A three-member committee will collect and examine the proposals submitted, and then select two (2) proposals to be presented in solo exhibitions at the Thessaloniki PhotoBiennale 2023 in venues selected by the MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography.

The MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography and the Cultural Society will organize the two exhibitions, in an effort to give a platform to remarkable photographic works by emerging artists.

The MATAROA project is a platform for Greek artists and contemporary culture in Greece. An initiative of the Cultural Business Association of Northern Greece that aims to promote contemporary Greek artistic creation and cultural activity, it consists of three main pillars: the annual printed publication, the web portal www.mataroa.gr and the eponymous young artists’ awards.

Submission of proposals:

Photographers should be Greek citizens or permanent residents of Greece.
Photographers should not have had any solo exhibition or publication of their work, in Greece or abroad, until October 2023.
Each applicant may submit ten (10) photographs of a work, which will constitute a specific thematic series, together with a brief description of the series (up to 200 words) and a short biography (up to 200 words).

The selection of the two (2) proposals will be made by a three-member evaluation committee consisting of:

-Domna Gounari, curator of MOMus-Experimental Center for the Arts
-Cosmas Pavlidis, photographer, head of studies of Stereosis.
-Manolis Skoufias, photographer, director of studies of esp+.

The two selected photographers can have a consultative collaboration with the members of the committee, so that their first solo exhibition is as complete as possible.
By submitting their entry, interested artists confirm that they have read and fully accept the terms and conditions of participation in the open call as stated above.

Technical specifications of the submitted digital files:

In case the submitted entry qualifies, the selected photographer(s) will be required to provide digital files suitable for printing in a minimum size of 30X45 cm. The cost of production will be borne by the co-organisers.

file name: each digital file must be titled with the photographer’s surname in roman characters and the serial number of the image, as in the following example: yourlastname_01.jpg, yourlastname_02.jpg.
