The MATAROA Design Awards ceremony was held on June 9th 2023, opening up and exploring a new artistic field in the MATAROA project’s activity and extroversion. Members, partners and friends of the Cultural Society and Thessaloniki Design Week 2023 including the Mayor of Thessaloniki, awarded the prizes to the winners of the open call procedure.
Focusing on the relationship between design and gastronomy, the new MATAROA awards were addressed to the community of designers and artists, who submitted their ideas and proposals on the themes of “Designing the restaurant of the future” & “Smart and innovative food concepts”. The aim of this initiative, as all MATAROA awards, is to reinforce the community of young designers and promoting their work on the international scene through the MATAROA platform.
The awards in the category “Designing the restaurant of the future” were received by:
For the category “Smart and innovative food concepts” the winners are the following:
Distinctive and innovative proposals participated in the competition and were awarded for their variability, sustainability, uniqueness, radical vision and the need for an evolved future full of creativity and productivity.
Open Kitchen won 1st prize in the category “Designing the restaurant of the future”: the project introduces us to a future world where home no longer exists on the same basis in our lives, but is under constant change and reinterpretation. At the same time, however, the proposal is linked to the only thing that remains constant, familiar and intimate to us. This is the Open Kitchen. In every town or village there is at least one Open Kitchen where we all bring to the table the culture that accompanies us, through the food we cook.
Similarly, the 1st prize in the category “Smart and innovative food concepts” was awarded to the project MICELL – An alternative to plastic & sustainable packaging, which presented a biodegradable box full of Greek flavours. MICELL is an experimental project that seeks to deliver a strong and durable packaging material suitable for the food industry. Based on this idea, a whole world of local flavours blossomed and the project “bite of a city” was born, which aims to help people experience different flavours from Greek regions and cities in a flexible and
sustainable way.
The ceremony was completed with an exhibition of the 10 submitted winning proposals . In addition to the above winners, the exhibition also showcases the proposals below:

As Vicky Papadimitriou, Director of the Cultural Society and coordinator of MATAROA project, states, “The MATAROA Awards initiative is the axis of the project that gives us the opportunity to support young artists, brings us in direct contact with them, and makes us aware of their potential and perspective. After visual arts and photography, the Cultural Society establishes the MATAROA Awards in Design, and in collaboration with Thessaloniki Design Week, supports the work of 9 award-winning artists, and presents – through the exhibition hosted by the organization – 20 innovative ideas that combine Design with Gastronomy. We ourselves realize the value of this awards initiative through the artists’ own words, which gives us even more motivation to continue and expand our activity in this direction”.
The MATAROA project continues to fulfill its vision and activity with renewed ideas that include more and more communities of Greek artists, constituting a platform with a wide vision that opens up a dialogue.
